Project : Kathak Kendra, Varanasi.

Kathak being the only classical dance form of northern india, the banaras gharana known as a dying art form with very few living exponents; the project was a revival of this particular traditional form in todays context.

A built form conceptualized to retain the essence of the ‘Gurukul system’ setup creating an institute as an extention of the teacher’s residence.

Primary dance spaces evolved based on the spatial construct of the dance form. User interaction determined the edge condition and public use spaces of the institute. A part of the design process was based on exploring sketches in water color / pen bringing in the balance of warm lit spaces and visual connections.
More emphasis was laid on the context of the place and culture of the people which led to the strong language of the built form with various open to sky couryards.
